Why Kids Forget What They Just Learned (and What Actually Works)

Your child aced the fractions quiz on Friday. By Tuesday, the same questions draw a blank stare. Before questioning the teacher, the tutor, or your child’s effort, it helps to understand why kids forget learning that looked solid only days earlier. The short answer, backed by more than a century of memory research, is that forgetting is not a malfunction. It is the brain’s default setting, and it is surprisingly predictable. The better news is that the same research points to a handful of review habits that reliably slow forgetting down, and most of them take minutes, not hours.

Forgetting Is the Default, Not a Defect

In the 1880s, German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus ran one of history’s first controlled memory experiments on himself. He memorized lists of nonsense syllables, then measured how much he retained after 20 minutes, an hour, a day, and out to 31 days. The result was the now famous forgetting curve: memory drops steeply in the first hours and days, then levels off. In 2015, Jaap Murre and Joeri Dros at the University of Amsterdam repeated the experiment and published the results in PLOS ONE. The curve held. Most forgetting happened within the first day, just as Ebbinghaus had found 130 years earlier.

Two things follow. First, your child forgetting much of Friday’s lesson by Tuesday is not a red flag. It is textbook human memory. Second, because the steepest losses happen early, the timing of review matters at least as much as the amount.

Why “Just Read It Again” Feels Right but Works Poorly

When kids review on their own, they usually reread notes or the textbook, often with a highlighter in hand. It feels productive because the material looks familiar on the second pass. But familiarity is not the same as memory, and this is where well intentioned study time quietly leaks away.

In 2013, John Dunlosky of Kent State University led a team that evaluated the evidence behind ten common study techniques for the journal Psychological Science in the Public Interest. Rereading and highlighting, the two techniques students lean on most, were rated low utility. They create a feeling of fluency without building the kind of memory that survives a week. The techniques that earned the strongest ratings were practice testing and spreading study out over time.

The Two Habits That Actually Slow Forgetting

Retrieval practice: close the book and try to remember

In a 2006 study published in Psychological Science, Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke at Washington University in St. Louis had students study short passages, then either restudy them or take a practice test. Five minutes later, the restudy group looked stronger. A week later, the pattern reversed decisively: the students who had been tested remembered substantially more. Rereading wins the sprint, retrieval wins the week, and school runs on weeks.

Pulling information out of memory, even slowly and with errors, strengthens it far more than passively taking it in again. Robert Bjork, the UCLA psychologist who coined the term desirable difficulties in 1994, has spent decades showing that effortful recall feels worse in the moment and works better in the long run.

At home, this is as simple as: close the book and tell me everything you remember about photosynthesis. Or: three questions from last week’s math, no peeking.

Spacing: shorter sessions, spread further apart

The second habit is about scheduling. In 2008, Nicholas Cepeda, Harold Pashler and colleagues published a study in Psychological Science covering more than 1,350 learners. They found that the ideal gap between study sessions depends on how long the material needs to last: the further away the test, the longer the ideal gaps between reviews. Cramming the night before can rescue tomorrow’s quiz, but the memory evaporates soon after. For material a child needs to hold for a month or more, reviews spaced days apart beat one long session, even when total study time is identical.

A practical rhythm: review briefly the same day, again a few days later, then once more the following week, each gap a little longer than the last.

A Review Routine That Takes Ten Minutes a Day

You do not need flashcard software or a color coded schedule. A simple weekly rhythm captures most of the benefit:

  • Same evening: ask your child to explain today’s key idea in their own words, book closed. Two or three minutes is enough.
  • Two or three days later: ask three quick questions about it, or have them redo two problems from earlier in the week.
  • Weekend: have your child teach the topic to you or a sibling. Teaching forces retrieval and exposes gaps gently.
  • Before a test: practice problems and self quizzing only. Rereading notes is the warm up, never the whole workout.

Two ground rules keep this from becoming a nightly interrogation. Keep sessions short, and stop while your child still has energy left. And treat wrong answers as information, not failure. An error discovered at the kitchen table is an error that will not appear on the exam.

When Forgetting Signals Something More

Normal forgetting looks like fuzzy details that come back quickly with a hint.
